58)Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Businesses should do anything they can to make a profit. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

The primary role of a business is to earn money. While some people argue that a business should do anything to turn a profit, others believe that businesses should follow strict guidelines and remember that money is not the only purpose for a corporations existence. I believe that businesses need to consider other aspects than money because they should not damage the environment or adversely affect the life of others.

First, businesses need to avoid damaging the environment. By damaging the environment, businesses are hurting the very people they are trying to serve. For example, manufacturing businesses may emit pollution and toxic waste. While government agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency are charged with preventing businesses from damaging the environment, a single instance can devastate thousands of people for generations. Many forms of toxic waste may be inadvertently or deliberately dumped into the local ecosystem. If these pollutants are carcinogenic, generations of inhabitants may be exposed to diseases such as various forms of cancer or hemophilia. Local inhabitants simply working at the local factor have then been given a death sentence. Businesses need to take responsibility for their actions and ensure they do not damage or pollute the environment.

Second, businesses need to consider the adverse effects they have on others. Many multinational corporations have factories throughout the world, the primary advantage being minimizing labor costs. While creating local jobs, this can also raise serious problems. For example, third world countries such as India have been found to have small children working in factories for almost no pay. Sweatshops may go on without the knowledge of the corporation, but it is their responsibility to ensure their activities do no harm other people. Businesses need to have a clear code of ethics that need to be considered before profit.

In conclusion, while it is the goal of a business to run at a profit, they should not do it at the expense of the environment or human life. Companies need to ensure they do not damage the environment and that their business practices do not allow activities such as child labor to flourish.
